My Grandfather is a Nihonjin

In development

Noboru is a 10 year old Japanese descendant in search of his cultural identity. He turns to his grandfather Hideo, to know more about his family. Despite always avoiding his past, Hideo agrees to tell Noboru his story. As Noboru digs into his family's history, he finds out he has an uncle he knew nothing about.

My Grandfather is a Nihonjin is a heartfelt animated feature that blends rich cultural heritage with stunning visuals. The film draws inspiration from the amazing work of Brazilian-Japanese painter Oscar Oiwa, while its script is adapted from a novel by Oscar Nakasato, a descendant of Japanese immigrants. The story of Noboru and his grandfather Hideo reflects the generational and cultural gap within immigrant families all over the world and contributes to show the beauty and cultural richness that arise from these processes. The project has garnered significant attention on the international festival circuit, being selected for pitching and work-in-progress sessions at renowned events such as Ventana Sur and MIFA Campus. In 2025, as Brazil and Japan celebrate the 130th anniversary of the Treaty of Friendship, Commerce, and Navigation, My Grandfather is a Nihonjin will have its world premiere at the prestigious Annecy International Animation Film Festival, making the film's release particularly timely and significant in this historic year.
